Supreme Court Stays Arrest of YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia in FIRs Over Controversial Remarks

The Supreme Court on Monday heard a writ petition filed by YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia seeking to club multiple FIRs registered against him over his controversial remarks on the show India’s Got Latent. A bench of Justice Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh granted partial relief, staying his arrest in Maharashtra and Assam while directing him to cooperate in the investigation.

Representing Allahabadia, advocate Dr. Abhinav Chandrachud informed the court that his client had received death threats after the incident. “There is a ₹5 lakh bounty announced for cutting his tongue,” Chandrachud stated. He also mentioned that Allahabadia’s mother, a doctor, was being harassed by people posing as patients.

Justice Kant strongly criticized Allahbadia’s remarks, calling them obscene and shameful. “If this is not obscenity in this country, then what is? The language used is unacceptable!” he remarked. He also noted that such statements insult parents and degrade society, questioning why courts should favor him.

The bench clarified that while it does not support public threats, the law will take its course. The court directed:

  1. No further FIRs shall be registered against Allahabadia based on the India’s Got Latent episode.
  2. Petitioner shall be at liberty to approach local police of Maharashtra and Assam for protection of his life and liberty in case of threat.
  3. His arrest in any future Jaipur FIR on the same allegations will also remain stayed.
  4. Allahabadia must deposit his passport at Thane Police Station and cannot leave India without court permission.
  5. He and his associates are barred from airing any new show until further orders.

Following the controversy, Allahbadia had issued a public apology on social media and revealed that he and his family had been facing severe backlash, including threats and harassment.

The case will be heard further as investigations proceed.
